Burton Albion won their first match in nine games at the Pirelli Stadium to push one step closer to securing their place in League One after beating Reading F.C 3-2.
The victory means they are now five points clear of Cheltenham Town, who face Peterborough on Tuesday night. A win for The Posh can see Burton confirm their safety.
The first half was full of goals with Mason Bennett, Mustapha Carayol and Bobby Kamwa scoring for the Brewers with Lewis Wing pulling one back for the Royals.
The second half provided less action as Burton managed to hold on to the three points despite a late scare with Sam Smith scoring from the spot.
Bennett opened the scoring for Burton after Joe Powell put in an excellent cross from a set piece that Reading failed to clear, allowing Bennett to smash the ball into the roof of the net.
Burton continued to dominate and quickly doubled their lead after veteran winger Carayol rolled back the years – bending a shot into the far corner past Joel Pereira – and scored his first league goal of the season.
Wing continued his excellent form for the visitors as he scored an excellent free kick from 25 yards, but Burton soon responded, with Kamwa finishing from close range.
Smith pulled one back through from the spot, but the Brewers managed to hold on to the three points and now face Fleetwood Town on Saturday, knowing that a win would secure their place in League One next season.
